The periorbital area and the eyelids are the ones that show the passing of time and worry the most. The main objective of this surgery is to provide the face with a sense of relaxation and a clear look.
There are many patients which may consult even though they are young, but they have fat “bags” in their eyelids that make them look older and more tired than they feel. A small surgery in this region may rejuvenate facial image a lot without even evidencing surgery.
It is important to consider the height of the eyebrows. Sometimes low eyebrows may be confused with an excess of skin in the upper eyelids which is often corrected with a pexia (raising) of the eyebrow and not with a Blepharoplasty.
Presence of prominent fat bags and excess of skin of the upper and lower eyelids as well as their muscular strengthening should also be evaluated.
The periorbital region may sometimes show changes as a consequence to renal, endocrine or ophthalmological affections, therefore, it is highly important to consult a specialized surgeon which may diagnose it before a surgical plan.
It is a simple procedure. Excess skin or fat is removed or fat bags are repositioned. Scars often evolve naturally and are hidden in the creases of the upper lids.
At the level of the lower lids a scar is not always needed. If only the fat bags are treated and there is no redundant skin, the incision is performed through an inner eyelid approach leaving no visual scars.
Eyelid surgery is usually performed as an outpatient procedure. The patient goes home with bare eyes and will be required to rest for 2 days. It is not a painful surgery, but edema and hematomas may appear which may disappear after 2 or 3 weeks. Stitches will be removed after 3 to 6 days.
