Gynecomasty refers to the increase of volume of the breasts in men. This could be caused by hormonal changes causing the growth of the mammary gland, or due to drugs (such as anabolics or hormones treatment) or even by normal body development.
Treatment depends on whether the gynecomasty refers to adipose or glandular tissue.
Surgical treatment is recommended only after discarding a hormonal problem.
The procedure usually combines liposuction with the removal of the excess breast tissue and the purpose is to create a more aesthetic, flatter, firmer, and better contoured chest, more balanced to the patient body built. It is customary to get a biopsy since the removed tissue could hide a tumor.
As breast cancer could also develop in men, a mammogram before the operation is needed.
