With the passing of time and the effect of gravity, the breasts modify their shape and position. There are many factors that interfere in this process. Breast weight, loss of skin elasticity, pregnancies and breast feeding among others.
The breast lift or mastopexy, is carried out to correct the sagging breasts and improve their shape filling the superior pole.
Implants are not always used in this kind of surgery. In some cases the breasts already have enough volume of their own and the correction is carried out lifting mammary tissues.
In some other cases in which, apart from falling there is also an emptiness of the superior sector or not enough volume for breast lift, an implant shall be necessary which will become not only the filling of the breast but also its support, providing the surgery with a long lasting result.
It is different in every case but the most common procedure involves a T-shaped incision following the natural contour of the breast.
The incision outlines the area from which breast skin will be removed and defines the new location for the nipple. When the excess skin has been removed, the nipple and areola are moved to a higher position. The skin surrounding the areola is then brought down and together to reshape the breast. Stitches are usually located around the areola, in a vertical line extending downwards from the nipple area, and along the lower crease of the breast, depending on the amount of skin resected.
Again, in this surgery, it is really important to discuss patient’s expectations and scars with the surgeon. Such scars are hidden in the area of the bra and are generally well tolerated by the patient.
Such as other breast surgeries, the patient will return home wearing a gym top which will be worn for a week. 5 to 7 days rest are recommended after surgery and after the first week the patient will be able to increase efforts slowly. Normal activities are not carried out until after a month from the operation.
