Breast reconstruction.

Breasts in a woman represent her sexual identity. Breast reconstruction provides the patient with the possibility to keep her breast line without losing her original breasts for causes such as tumors or other pathologies. Breast reconstruction is not an aesthetic procedure, but a right that a patient has to recover completely from her disease and have a good life quality.

In which patients will breast reconstruction be indicated?

In all such patients who present an asymmetry in her breasts as a consequence of a total or partial removal of breast tissue. Today, reconstructive options are wide, and thanks to science, the quality of the reconstruction is getting better every day.

Is it possible to carry out a breast reconstruction in the same surgery of the breast removal?

Yes, it is. Today, breast reconstruction starts from the same removal of the breast (immediate reconstruction), when the oncologic conditions allow it. In cases where that is not possible, the reconstruction shall be started in a different surgery.

Breast reconstruction may be performed even many years after breast removal.

Is it possible to solve the whole breast reconstruction in one operation?

Not generally. Only in some cases where the breasts are small and a very small and conservative surgery is carried out and where the tumor features allow to respect the skin and the nipple area.

It is important that the patient knows beforehand that the breast reconstruction requires, in general, more than one surgery. Reconstruction in several steps implies a bigger effort for the patient, but the results obtained are much better.
